Description
Click to see supersized image We are presenting for sale a stunning 1602 copy of Alciati's Emblemata. On the title page the title is engraved on a monument with columns with an effigy of Alciati at the top by the engraver Jaques de Wieert whose name appears at the base of the columns. The complete text on the title page reads: OMNIA ANDREAE ALCIATI. V. C. EMBLEMATA Cum Commentariis, quibus emblematum detecta origine, dubia omnia, et obscura illustrantur. Adiectae Nouae appendices nusquam antea editae. Per Claude Minoem Juriscon: Parasiis. In Officina Ioan: Richerii sumptibus Stephani Valleti sub Bibliis aureis e regione Collegii Remesis 1602. Cum Priui Regis. The book's author, Andrea Alciato (1492-1550), is commonly known as Alciati (Andreas Alciatus). He was an Italian jurist and writer and is regarded as the founder of the French school of legal humanists. He is most famous for his Emblemata, written in Latin, which is a collection of 211 woodcuts, each accompanied with a title that is a motto or proverb and an explanatory text. In this edition the 211th woodcut is mislabeled CCXIII. This beautiful book measures approximately 7" by 4.5" and is bound in fine brownish-orange leather with raised bands on the spine and gilt lettering and design. There are 964 pages with an Index starting on page 965. All page edges are gilded with marbled endpapers. The book is in exceptional condition overall for its age with minimal scuffing of the leather along the edges and lightening of the spine. The gilding on the inside and outside of the covers and page edges shows minimal wear. The interior pages are clean and intact with light toning and minimal foxing on a few pages with no observed writing or markings except for a brief presentation note on the ffep. The book is flexible for reading but the binding remains tight. A dozen or so pages at the back of the book have a very small hole in them that may have been from a bookworm. At Tilling Traders we believe there should be no such thing as site unseen when purchasing our books.
