The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon No I,II,III,IV,V (No I is defective) 1819 + 1820 - New York - Van Winkle 6" by 9" - 169, 92, 93, 108, 120pp FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE     DETAILS Leather bound collection of Irvings sketches! The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, written by Washington Irving, is a collection of sketches, many of which are based on American and Dutch folklore, and contains two of Washington Irving's best-known short stories, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." Other tales include "Roscoe," "The Broken Heart," "The Art of Book-making," "A Royal Poet," "The Spectre Bridegroom," "Westminster Abbey," "Little Britain," "Traits of Indian Character," "Philip of Pokanoket," and "John Bull." Though Irving claimed the collection is without narrative, a few recurring conceits give cogency and thematic weight to the piece. The primary concerns of the work are American literary validity and the Revolutionary War (including the consequential changes in politics and economics). "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" were adapted into Disney cartoons. CONDITION The binding is not tight and firm and volume one is detached and defective.  The boards and spine are attached to each other but detached from the main binding.  There is some wear to the extremities.  Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from some background spotting.  The title page for volume three is mis bound at the end of volume four.
