Publisher: Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood, 1864.    First Edition - Scarce Notes: Grant's 'Walk Across Africa' remains one of the most elusive of early African exploring books. This is the RARE FIRST EDITION - TOGETHER WITH ALS - Original Letter Signed by the Author! James Grant accompanied Speke on his journey across Africa to solve the riddle of the source of the Nile. Together they discovered the sources of the Nile in 1863. Meant as a companion to Speke's account of the journey, Grant's volume explores the "ordinary life and pursuits, the habits and feelings of the natives" and the economic potential of the countries they traveled. He also includes a remarkable colour map showing the expedition's route from Zanzibar to the Mediterranean. With ALS Autograph Letter Signed 'J.A. Grant', written to Sir Rawson dealing with various Africa related matters. This is an original letter signed by Grant, dated 10.11.84, addressed to Sir Rawson, and mentioning contemporary events and topics pertaining to Africa. The letter is written on his personal stationery embossed 'Househill, Nairn'. Grant had married and settled down in Nairn, and also died there in 1892. Excerpt from Grant's letter: "I read in the Times of Friday that you wrote a paper on the Partition of Africa....    at all times your statistics on Africa would be of great interest,    but considering the assembly of a conference at Berlin and the small war in Buchanaland...." End Excerpt. Grant continues to say that he regrets not having been able to attend Thomson's lecture. Pioneering Africa Explorer James A. Grant - Handwritten Letter Signed and Dated! Sir Rawson wrote a paper 'On the Partition of Africa' which was published by the Royal Geographical Society in their Proceedings in November 1884 followed by a paper by Joseph Thomson 'Through the Masai Country to Victoria Nyanza' which appeared in the Proceedings of December 1884. The Berlin Conference was held in Berlin between November 15, 1884 and November 26, 1884, under the leadership of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The result of the Conference was a method of dividing the continent of Africa between the European powers. This letter shows Grant's continuing interests with matters Africa long after he had returned from his expedition.
