Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (November 13, 1850–December 3, 1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet and travel writer, and a representative of neo-romanticism in English literature. He was the man who "seemed to pick the right word up on the point of his pen, like a man playing spillikins", as G. K. Chesterton put it. Stevenson was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Vladimir Nabokov,[1] and J. M. Barrie.[2] Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their definition of modernism. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the canon. CONDITION The bindings are tight and firm with all covers and internal pages securely attached. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including marks to the boards and minor splitting to some of the spines. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, apart from the occasional handling mark. There is some offsetting to the blank-end papers and library stickers to the front pastedowns. There are library stamps to the reverse of the title pages, with the ink slightly visible on the title pages. Overall, these volumes are in very good condition.
