Description of Contents.  ‘John Chamberlain is the most important sculptor of the Abstract Expressionist generation.  His oeuvre – in addition to its aesthetic impact – is historically significant for having returned color to the repertoire of sculpture and for having given volume to the gestural spontaneity of Abstract Expressionism.  Although best known for his sculptures and reliefs assembled from crushed automobile body parts.  Chamberlain has also worked in many other mediums: welded steel, fiber glass, urethane foam, galvanized steel and aluminium foil.  As Klaus Kertess writes in his introductory essay to this volume, “Chamberlain’s sculpture has remained on the cutting edge of contemporary art through several later generations of painters and sculptors.” All of Chamberlain’s sculptural work to date – more than 800 pieces – is brought together in this book, in which every sculpture by the artist is exhaustively documented.  Every work for which photographic documentation exists is illustrated in full colour.  The volume’s indispensability as a reference is enhanced by the inclusion of a chronology of the artists’ life and career, an exhibition history, a bibliography, and an index. The Catalogue Raisonne is by Julie Sylvester, who has also curated major retrospective exhibition of Chamberlain’s work at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.  She provides extensive interviews with the artist, in which his personal life and his career as sculptor, painter and filmmaker are illuminated with rare insight and wit. Noted critic and curator Klaus Kertess has written an important text that presents a perceptive history and appreciation of Chamberlain’s work in the context of post-war American art. John Chamberlain: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Sculpture 1954-85 handsomely explores and documents one of the most compelling, colourful and influential sculptural oeuvres of the twentieth century.’ A highly prized and extremely rare book.
