Description
Two letters from C.S. Lewis, dated 1957 (see images). These are letters in response to an invitation from President Dr. Trippet to make a presentation at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Dr. Trippet was Byron Trippet, President of Wabash College, a small men's liberal arts college. Dr. Trippet had just become president and the college was celebrating its 125th anniversary. In all the series includes: 1) Dr. Trippet's letter to CS Lewis of April 8, 1957 on 'onionskin'; 2) Dr. Trippet's onionskin of same date to John Wendon of Cambridge, UK; 3) Lewis' first 'refusal'; 4) Trippet's re-extension of the invitation; and 5) Lewis' handwritten note again declining the invitation. On the handwritten Lewis scan, there are reddish spots visible but these are artifacts of the scanning process. The lighter areas in Mr. Lewis' writing are in the original, at least with respect to lighter areas in the 5th and 7th lines of the front side. Since this is written with a fountain pen, this would seem to indicate that he was exerting less pressure. It is conceivable that he was dipping his pen in an inkwell, and that the ink 'load' had depleted, but this does not happen repeatedly at set intervals, so I would assume the former is the case.As to the second letter, it is on a half-sheet of typing paper, and is somewhat wrinkled, and has been stapled in the upper left-hand corner. The original is not as dark as the scan. The three onionskins from Dr. Trippet are a little wrinkled, but can be pressed out nicely I think.Items 1,2, and 4 have little general intrinsic value, except that they place items 3 and 5 in context. All sales on this item are final. Accordingly I would ask that only serious bidders place bids. From the collection of the late Dr. Eric Dean, Wabash College teacher 1957 to 1989.
