Description
This is the third edition of the famous German Bibles printed in Germantown PA by Christopher Sower (Saur, Sauer), and his son of the same name, in 1743, 1763, and 1776 (the last two editions were printed by Christopher Sower Jr.,as his father died in 1758). This edition is known as the "Gun Wad Bible", as part of the leaves for this third edition, before they were bound, were made into cartridges during the Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War. These three editions of the German Bible were printed before any English Bible was printed in America. The first English Bible wasn’t printed in America until 1882. This 1776 Sower Bible was professionally restored in Lancaster PA, with a full leather calf skin binding over the original oak boards, raised bands as original, two brass clasps handcrafted in Germany, new headbands, and interior restoration when needed. The end papers and flyleaves have been replaced with rag paper, toned to match the existing pages, with some waviness matching existing pages. An original title page and forward from an identical damaged copy were remargined for this copy. The text along the front edge of the forward has been restored. There is typical foxing throughout, and damp stains, especially toward the front and the back of the Bible. The main area including the second title page is very nice. Although it is not perfect, this scarce 1776 "Gun Wad Bible" is a nice example of one of America's most historic Bibles. Christopher Sower Jr., who printed this Bible, was an elder in the Germantown congregation of the Brethren Church, which was organized in 1708 in Germany. The Brethren Church is celebrating their 300th anniversary this year. There is much interest among the Brethren in the Christopher Sowers and their Bibles. Six denominations descended from the Brethren Church organized in 1708. They are The Church of the Brethren, The Grace Brethren Church, The Brethren Church (Ashland), The Old German Baptist Brethren, The Dunkard Brethren, and The Conservative Grace Brethren Church. This Sower Bible would be a great display item in any of these churches, as they display items from their past history as they celebrate their 300th anniversary of the Brethren Church.
