Description
EL INGENIOSO HIDALGO DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA C O M P U E S T O POR MIGUEL DE CERVÁNTES SAAVEDRA. N U E V A E D I C I O N C O R R E G I D A POR LA REAL ACADEMIA ESPAÑOLA. … CON SUPERIOR PERMISO: EN MADRID POR DON JOAQUIN IBARRA IMPRESOR DE CÁMARA DE S. M. Y DE LA REAL ACADEMIA. MDCCLXXX. El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha: By Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. 1780. Printed by Joaquin de Ibarra “Impresor de Cámara de su Magestad”. Well-knowned as one of the most famous and beautiful editions of Cervante´s Quixote. Carefully printed, there is a typographic perfection, lavishly illustrated with special-made plates and with one double page map made by Tomas Lopez, this edition is probably the most appreciated among the Bibliophiles. Ibarra was commissioned by the “Real Academia” to make this edition, considered as the best from the XVIII century and not without reason. The plates were made by Carmona, Montaner, Ballester, Fabregat, Selma and some others; the drawings were made by Brunete, Carnicero, del Castillo, Barranco, Gil, Arnal and Ferro. The text comes mainly from the second edition by de la Cuesta (1605). The text comes from the 1605 Cuesta edition, at the time though to be the first, actually is the second. Cervantes life and the Quijote analisis are by Vicente de los Ríos. For the creation of this magnific edition new types were made, the paper was of the highest quality. Along with this, La Conjuración de Catilina are two best and more well-knowned impressions by Ibarra, famed to be the best printer of his time in Spain, some say he had nothing to envy from Bodoni or Didot. Only 1,600 copies were printed. Palau, 52024. Suñé, 60. Price references: price completely depends on both inner and binding condition. Marroquin copies have sold for over 30,000usd, poor copies sell for 6,000-8,000euros (or around 10,000usd). This is a great copy internally with a very attractive binding. Four volumes In-Folio (308mm x 235mm). 19th century full calf with gold gilt in spine and boards, probably done in cold, blind tooled over boards. A wonderful example of early 19th century binding. Collation is as follows: Vol. 1. [1] blank + frontis + II leaves + portrait + XIV + CCXXIV + 199 + map + [1] blank and 6 plates; Vol. 2. [2] blank + frontis + II leaves + 418 + [2] blank and 9 plates; Vol. 3. [2] blank + frontis + II leaves + XIV + CCXXIV + 199 + map + [1] blank and 7 plates; and Vol. 4. [2] blank + frontis + II leaves + 346 + [2] blank and 9 plates. Absolutely complete of all text pages and plates. Binding Condition skillfull restoration to spine mostly and hinges. Minnor loss to some corners and spines –now restored-, ex libris removed. Excellent condition. Text Condition minor foxing to a very few pages, mostly not affecting text except one frontis which is more heavily foxed. Excellent margins, wonderful strong impression. Magnific copy.
