Description
I have been informed by two ebayer's so far that the pictures ARE NOT showing when they access this listing on ebay. 4freedomsorg Store IF THE PICTURES DON'T SHOW FOR YOU (BELOW), WE HAVE THEM HOSTED ON OUR WEBSITE: http://4freedoms.org/the_democratic_book_1936.htm   You may also want to check the link below to the other booksellers at addall.com -- They show 5 books available, but it is only TWO ... from $3850 to $4900 ... at least one has split leather at the binding.  http://used.addall.com/SuperRare/RefineRare.fcgi?start=0&id=080725154335143265&dispCurr=USD&inTitle=the+democratic+book+1936&inAuthor=roosevelt&inDesc=&exTitle=&exAuthor=&exDesc=&match=Y&&order=PRICE&ordering=DESC   Otherwise, all essential information is listed below. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Up for sale is this is rare Limited First Edition Number 1838 -- (2500 unstated)   Signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt These books were presented to 'insiders' such as prominent donors, advertisers, convention delegates and so on. Borden R. Putnam was a prominent figure in New Jersey we found. Though not published, we found an estimate of just 2,500 of these were in the limited edition. Our Internet research turned up perhaps four of these in varying condition with stated prices ranging from about $2000 to $6200. One Internet site apparently just sold their copy ... the asking price was $6000. Another woman emailed me for information and later told me she sold hers to a collector for $7,000.  Three recently sold on ebay for $1,700, $1,950 and $3,000. Our book is listed on our web site at $4,900, but can be bought here on ebay for much, much less.   ABOUT THE BOOK! Full leather presentation binding. Silk endpapers. # 1838. Signed by Roosevelt. ; 8vo; Signed by Author Roosevelt. Hardcover. Book Condition: Book Very Good with no dust jacket (none issued we think); Hinges are sound. Binding shows minor edgewear and scuffing. A little more worn at top of spine with the aforementioned break in the leather. Discoloration or fading along edges of endpaper as usual. Interior front and back pages discolored around the edges. Two blank flyleaves in front and back are faded.   Overall, the condition of this book is consistent with age and very little use. It would be hard to find this rare book with an interior better than this one. This copy is in FINE/VERY FINE condition in the interior ... bright and clean. The corners are bumped and wear to the bottom part of the spine is seen in the picture. The top of the spine is similar with the exception of a barely visible three inch break on the front outside. Signed limitation page bright and clean. Etched and Watercolored White House is very nice ... many times this page is removed and framed and/or sold. When we first read this, the temptation was to take this apart and sell the gorgeous advertising pages, historical figures individually and so on ... but that ugly thought quickly passed! We consider this book to be a important historical piece. FDR's signature was found at prices ranging from $500 to $1000 just for  photographs and innocuous letters. More important pieces sell for much more. This is one of them. Below found on the Internet "“The Democratic Book, 1936” has been signed by Roosevelt on a plate in the book with a hand colored engraving of the White House. This is a coffee table sized book with a mountain of information about Democratic leaders throughout the country as well as FDR’s acceptance speech, the Democratic Platform of 1936, and biographies of all the Cabinet members. It also has articles on Congress, the Supreme Court, and all the Cabinet departments. A voluminous book of information and advertising that was used as a fund raiser for the Democratic Party. It also contains reproductions of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. This was a limited edition book and because Roosevelt’s signature is on a beautiful, hand colored engraving of the White House, most of these books had this engraving removed and framed for display." ... $2000 Another Internet finding: "[published date: 1936] Hardcover First Edition/Leather-bound. Measures 14" by 11" and weighs over 7 pounds. A fine copy of this increasing rare document with only minimal wear and slight fading to the interior rim of the interior cloth-lined boards. Bound in brown leather with gilt lettering intact on front. SIGNED by Franklin Roosevelt beneath a color image of the White House on the limitation leaf. This is number 923 of an unstated 2500 copies. Entirely intact, bright and tight, it would be difficult to find a more well preserved copy. Beautiful. Folio, 384 pages. ... $4900 And to top it off, check this out from TIME/CNN: "Published last week was The Democratic Book *** 1940. Smaller than the 394-page The Democratic National Convention—1936, The Book was not expected to bring in as much revenue. The 1936 non-fiction success sold at $2.50 a copy ($250 for a copy autographed by President Roosevelt), and grossed well over a million dollars. Because of the ill-timed remarks of G. O. P. Candidate Wendell Willkie, who complained that the publishing venture violated the Hatch Act, disgusted Democrats gave the 1940 edition away, 100,000 copies of it. Estimated revenue: less than a quarter of a million dollars. That revenue came from advertising, which filled 100½ of The Book's 184 slick pages. Chief advertisers were firms concerned with national defense: construction companies, architects, engineers, machine-tool manufacturers, makers of airplanes, tanks. Other space buyers (at $2,500 for a full page in black & white; $3,125 for a full page in color; $8,500 for the back cover in color) were International Business Machines Corp., American Sales Book Co., Inc., many another company with which the Government does business. Radio Comedian Jack Benny, bought a half page to announce without fanfare: "Jack Benny." Editorial content, compiled by Publicity Chief Charles Michelson, included a foreword by ex-National Chairman James A. Farley, a biography of Henry Wallace, essays on phases of the New Deal, the President's acceptance speech. Asked about the origin of The Book, which has burgeoned under many titles for almost 100 years, Editor Michelson snorted: "It's automatic, like the Jackson Day Dinner."" Thank you for looking!
