Description
FINE FULLY ILLUMINATED QURAN Copy executed for a Mamluk prince or some such eminent person Dimensions: 321 mm (12.6 inches) by 229 mm (9 inches). Pagination: 273 leaves. Period: Egypt or Syria . Around AD 1320. (= Hijri 720). Script: Muhaqqaq. Paper: Thick, polished, cream paper. The paper, a high-quality Mamluk type, feels like vellum and is still very strong and flexible. Binding: Eighteenth-century Ottoman leather binding with gilt-stamped central medallion and corner pieces. Illumination 1. Five pages of full illumination as follows: · Opening double folio with geometric and foliate illumination in colours and gold. · The above-mentioned is followed by another double folio of illumination in colors and gold for the first two suras (chapters) of the quran. (‘al-hamdu’ & ‘albaqara’) · The quran ends with a fully illuminated page. 2. The title of each sura is placed within an illuminated cartouche extending into the margin. Many of these cartouches are still fresh and clean with the gold still shiny and the colours strong and rich. 3. Gold roses at the end of verses. Numerous marginal devices marking the divisions of ayas (verses). 4. The word 'allah' (a frequently occurring word) is written throughout in gold outlined in black. Occasionally, whole phrases are copied in gold in the same way. 5. In most Korans, the basmalah is written in black. However in our Koran, the 'basmalah' at the beginning of each sura is written in gold outlined in black. Condition One half leaf is a later replacement, occasional soiling and smudging, some minor water-staining in the upper inner margin towards the end of the koran, a few pages with tiny and mostly inconspicuous wormholes. Condition overall is very good. All the experts who saw our koran were impressed by how good its condition overall is. To summarize, as a mamluk 700-year-old book, the condition of our koran can be described as very good (8 out 10).
