Description
Original Twentieth Century playscript as written by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur. Pre-production changes marked in pencil by Hecht himself. The three act play opened at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York on Dec 29, 1932 and had 152 performances through May 20, 1933. Was later brought to the screen by Columbia Pictures a year later on May 11, 1934. Lombard and Barrymore played the leads in the classic screwball comedy. One of Ben Hecht's most recognizable Broadway/Motion Picture hits. The play is also linked to Groucho Marx who performed the stage version with his wife for a one week stint the week of Aug 13,1934 at the Lakewood Theatre in Maine. At the time his contract with Paramount was not renewed after the release of Duck Soup. This was the first stage play he was in without his brothers. He was considering leaving the movies and returning to the stage. Some Critic reviews noted that his performance was better than Barrymore's. Judging from Barrymore's grasp of the part it must have been a riot seeing Groucho through himself into the Oscar Jaffe role. This is your opportunity to see the version that Groucho performed. The movie and stage versions are quite different. The playscript version sold by Samuel French is the revised stage version (remade in 1978 entitled "On the Twentieth Century". It does not contain all the original material. Truly one of a kind. In all my years of collecting, I have not come across another like it. Playscript is in very good condition. No tears are present. Condition indicates the script was used by one of the performers or directors as it does show signs of handling. Blue paper binding shows wear along the edges as well as minor soiling on first two pages (see scans) but overall is in good condition. The front cover looks worn but has served its purpose in protecting what is underneath. The rest of the pages have been well preserved. Piece of history has held up well for being 75 years old. A very scarce playscript in this kind of condition. Will send potential buyers more scans of the condition of inside pages upon request. Other than the first two pages which have slight discoloration, from page three forward the rest is in same condition as the sample page shown in scan. Sale does not include the original playbill seen in one of the scans as that will remain in my collection - was added to show potential buyers that Groucho was given top billing. The headlines from the Nevada newspaper review are also shown to confirm that his appearance on stage was his first straight role.
