The cover print and surfaces are modestly rubbed with some creasing at the ends of the spine. There is bounding of the corners with edge wear but no worn through areas or significant fraying. The book has been fitted with a Protective Dust Jacket of 5 ml. clear Mylar to help preserve it in the future. The interior reveals new end papers front and rear with hinges well intact. The contents are clean, firmly bound with no loose or mis-aligned signatures. Age toning is modest, consistent with the date of publication, free of foxing to text or plates. There are no previous owner names, notations, marks, creases or tears. THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK is Jack London’s story of the building of the Snark and his cruise with his wife Charmian, from San Francisco to Honolulu, then on through the South Seas. This was to have been the realization of a life’s dream for the author, however, as rumor has it, he was deeply in debt at the time although he claims to have paid for the building of the Snark himself.  He had contracted with a magazine to deliver 35,000 words describing his trip for which he was to have been paid his standard story rate. However, the magazine promptly took credit for financing the entire trip. The trip progressed, but was plagued with troubles and misfortune. Overcome with health problems, Mr. London was forced to abandon his planned voyage and return home to Glen Ellen, California. It is a fascinating story of the London’s cruise to the South Seas; Hawaii, the Marquesa’s, Tahiti, Bora Bora, the Solomon’s and Australia.. Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 are specifically of the portion of their trip that took place in Hawaiian waters.  Mr. London presents artful word pictures of both land and sea and one of the most eloquent descriptions of the feat of surfing that I have had the pleasure of reading. The story provides not only a view of the tropics through the eyes of one of America’s greatest authors, but also an opportunity to get to know him as an individual. * * * * * * * * * * Offering 2 in this Lot: OUR HAWAII by CHARMAIN KITTREDGE LONDON (Mrs. Jack London) New York THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1917 Copyright 1917, By CHARMIAN K. LONDON Set up and electrotyped. Published December, 1917. The Title Page of this book is blind stamped "ADVANCED COPY FOR REVIEW", "NOT FOR SALE." Hardbound near fine condition, 427 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE, FOREWORD, List of ILLUSTRATIONS (15 pages), Colored Map and 5 pages of PUBLISHER ADS at the rear, measures approximately 5 ½" x 8", no dust jacket. The boards are covered in blue ribbed cloth with printing and graphic blind stamped in gold. The book is in very nice condition. I have found this book usually is quite worn, not one to be left sitting on the shelf. There is creasing at the ends of the spine and slight wear at the corners, but no worn through areas, no tears, fraying, etc. The surfaces are clean, unfaded and with corners rounded but not bumped. The book has been fitted with a Protective Jacket of 5 ml. Clear Mylar to protect it in the future. The interior reveals clean, tight contents, firmly bound, no loose or mis-alligned pages. Age toning is modest with no foxing noted to text or plates. There is an interesting previous owner name and notation written in pencil in the upper portion of the fly page. There are no previous owner names, notations, no marks, creases or tears. OUR HAWAII is an engaging account of Mrs. London’s first hand experiences in Hawaii with her husband Jack London. She gives very detailed descriptions of all that she sees, most of which she takes great pleasure in. Like a child at a fair, I had no attention for the way of my feet in the grass, and Jack laughed paternally at my absorption as he piloted me by the elbow, with a "Dear Kid—it’s a pleasure to take you anywhere, you do have such a good time!" Mrs. London is what might be considered a good guest, in that she is seems to be quite cultured, yet does not let her refinement hinder her participation and enjoyment in the activities at hand. Through her we also gain some insight into her husband, the celebrated author Jack London. The late 1800’s/early 1900s were the social "hey-day" of Hawaii. At last anyone who could afford the trip, could travel to the Islands with relative comfort in just a week to 10 days. The availability of making the crossing in comfort coupled with the lure of the Hawaiian Islands made visits by well known personages almost an everyday occurrence. The London’s of course were very much a part of the inner circle of local celebrities privileged with royal introductions and hospitality throughout the Islands including the Big Island and on Maui where they were houseguests of the von Tempski’s at the Haleakala Ranch. Although OUR HAWAII does not take in each island in organized tour fashion, for those visited, it is really quite a superb narrative. It is somewhat scarce, in that Charmian London did not share the public acclaim that her husband enjoyed, far fewer copies were printed. Yet it is well written, a pleasure to read. This particular copy is quite rare, being a Blind Stamped "ADVANCE COPY FOR REVIEW" one of the earliest of the 1st Editions. * * * * * * * * * * Offering 3 in this Lot: Included with this book is a Handwritten check, Dated Nov. 15, 1910, drawn on The Merchants National Bank, San Francisco with cancellations on the reverse side, plus a purferated cancellation, "PAID 1 22 10"; maker JACK LONDON.
