Description
THE WOMAN OF HONOR JOHN CLELAND 1768 AN EPISTOLATORY NOVEL IN 3 OCTAVO VOLUMES. Cleland wrote Fanny Hill in 1748-9 "The memoirs of a woman of pleasure", for which he was tried for obsenity (corrupting the king's subjects). The judge at his trial told him to write more morally elevating works. This is the result, an epistolatory novel in three volumes. Fanny Hill is still in print (the last trial of the book for obsenity was in 1963 in Boston), but "The Woman of Honor" is forgotten. There are 8 copies in libraries in the United States and England. The boards are missing, and the spine is almost gone, but the book's pages are intact, no pages are missing, and no writing except on the back page of Volume I is the name Mary [?m],upside down on the back of the end paper, and on the inside of the title page of I in faint writng "there are some good sentiments in this book.
