Thanks, Ace_______________________________________ I have the Rare Pleasure to be able to bring you two FANTASTIC Antiquarian Illustrated Treasures-- NEVER BEFORE OFFERED TOGETHER !! The First is simply entitled "PANTOMIME - A PICTURE SHOW For The YOUNG ". It has the same 32 page PANTOMIME Section as the Second Book shown -- "PANTOMIME and MINSTREL SCENES...A PICTURE CARNIVAL For The YOUNG" !! In this Earlier Book the Pantomime section is followed by a Similar 32 page BLACK, NEGRO, BLACK-FACE MINSTREL SHOW Section, with 8 Additional Outrageous Full Color Chromo Plates -- except in this section, the Two Page Folded double plates are in Full Color, not two-toned -- making this Almost VICIOUS comic TRAVESTY of Black People in Minstrel Show Format even more DRAMATIC!! The transformation of the original term Minstrel as a singing, string playing entertainer into a derogatory portrayal of African Americans came with Slavery in America, & with Whites putting on black-face makeup to Mock their Stereotypical behaviors & songs. They were also called 'Nigger Shows' (quoting Mark Twain!), and lasted into the 1950's -- I remember going to them as a kid. But putting these Scenes into Comic Illustrated Print is a different story. There is even one Vignette connecting a Black man to the "Missing Link" -- often shown as such in early Carnival Side shows as well. J. L. Blamire's work is Excellent. But I believe this ORIGINAL FIRST EDITION Title had a short life due to public outrage that this was ACTUALLY DIRECTED TOWARD CHILDREN!! It is thus Truly RARE. Complete except for plain fly leafs, it even has the Printer on the final page, showing a Watermelon eating Piccaninny -- WEMPLE & COMPANY, Lithographers & Color Printers, New York. Boards are edge worn, Spine cloth missing & some top end nibbling, only affecting a tiny edge section of a few pages, less than a quarter inch. No Really Torn or Damaged pages. 10" X 12.5" Easily Rebound (all pages loose) and what a Lifetime Treasure if you did !!They are both dated the same year from George Routledge & Sons, London & New York, and they both carry 1883 copyright for the illustrations by J.L. BLAMIRE, and they have Identical Front Board Full Color Pictorial Paste on - EXCEPT FOR THE TITLE. The Real Difference is the Rear Board & Contents. The Simple PANTOMIME Title has an Advertising Rear Paste on Listing Routledge's Titles up through 1891, Including Kate Greenaway Titles. It also has a neat inscription on the blank fly leaf dated 1892.However, the PANTOMIME & MINSTREL SCENES Book simply has a Decorated/Patterned Paste on. It is my opinion that this indeed the FIRST EDITION/FIRST STATE.The later "Politically Corrected" Edition appears to be the FIRST PRINTING as well !! When you view that Title's Illustrations, you will see why I believe Routledge chose never to publish it again, but rather published the Title later WITHOUT THE BLACK-FACE MINSTREL ILLUSTRATED SECTION !! It was probably viewed as outrageous as publishing O.J. Simpson's "How I WOULD HAVE KILLED THEM" bOOK!! This Second Version Title has somewhat edge worn Bright boards, slightly scuffed rear (all legible) & full Cloth Spine. It is COMPLETE in 32 pages plus fly leaves, with only mark being the 1892 Inscription. No Damage to pages, though thread binding is unraveled, & separated from the binder, leaving pages loose in sections. There are the 8 FABULOUS CHROMO PLATES with skits & antics of our White-Face Mime -- clearly influenced by the SCHOENHUT CIRCUS CLOWN / LAFAYETTE G.W. FOX's HUMPTY DUMPTY Play portrayals -- with every text page having two tone illustrated vignettes, plus two Double Fold Fully Illustrated sections. 10" x 12.5" WHAT A PAIR of TREASURES !! Circus, Clown, Carnival, White-Face, Mime, Ethnic, Black, Black-Face, & Cirque Du Soleil -- at it's ORIGINAL ANTIQUE FIRST EDITION(S) Best!! I WILL ONLY SELL THESE TOGETHER!!GUARANTEED ORIGINAL & AUTHENTIC ANTIQUES!!... SATISFACTION 100% GUARANTEED!! I DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE "BEST OFFERS".
