THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEAREIN EIGHT VOLUMESwith the Corrections and illustrations of Various Commentators To Which Are AddedNOTES by SAMUEL JOHNSON1765 Published in London for J and R Tonson and others in1765in Eight Volumes, this is the first variorum edition of Shakespeare plays edited and annotated by Dr Johnson on which he worked on for many years on, and this text and notes formed the foundation of modern Shakespeare Scholarship with Johnson’s very scholarly annotations throughout the text and lengthy preface, also included are prefaces of Warburton, Ben Johnson, Pope, Theobold and others, it was through Johnson’s study of Shakespeare’s text from which he drew over 20,000 words which he included in his famous Dictionarythe books are bound in old FULL CALF LEATHER BINDINGS, internally the first volume bears the portrait of Shakespeare by G Virtue, without the publishers imprint of Longman and the Johnson preface unpaginated , these being the correct issue points of the first printing of this editionCONDITIONalthough bound in original full calf leather, the books appear to be of two slightly different binding styles, four have gilt decoration to spines and the other four with plainer spines, ownership plates indicate that the books may have come from two different sets though they are uniform in size and are all first issues, the bindings are noticeably worn, joints cracked to both boards of all books though boards still holding , loss and wear to leather at corners, edges and spine ends, loss to most of spine title labels, some marking to some boards with a small amount of loss to leather, else in good unrestored condition, internally endpapers browned, some mild browning and light marking within else contents are generally nice and clean, some mild pencil underling to some words of text to volume one, text blocks square and tight, A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS THE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EDITIONS OF THE PLAYS OF SHAKESPEARE EDITED AND ANNOTATED BY DR JOHNSONIN ORIGINAL UNRESTORED CONDITIONA VERY LOW START ON THIS IMPORTANT SET WHICH NORMALLY COMMANDS PRICES OF $7000.00 to $9000.00PLEASE BEWAREBOOKS ARE VERY HEAVYOVER 7 KILOS PACKED (THAT’S OVER 15lbs)OVERSEAS SHIPPING IS EXPENSIVE IF PICTURES FAIL TO APPEAR CORRECTLYJUST CLICK YOUR REFRESH TAB I have many more rare and interesting books listed in my other auctions.
